One of these was Chloe Harris, who left the village on Boxing Day with her baby son Reuben.

Chloe – played by Jessie Elland – had been caught up in a love triangle with Mackenzie Boyd – Reuben’s father – and Charity Dingle, and many Emmerdale fans felt it dragged on for longer than necessary.

They were then delighted it was resolved with Chloe’s departure, but in a recent interview with Inside Soap, Mackenzie actor Lawrence Robb teased she could return in the future.

He said: “I was gutted when Jessie left – me and Jessie got on really well. I still speak to her quite a lot.

“It was bittersweet, I guess, in many ways because whilst I really enjoyed working with her while we were on set, I know that she’s doing really well now.

“I know that she’s really enjoying doing what she’s doing now. So while it was sad on one level, I’m also very happy for her.

“There’s always scope and I think they left it deliberately open for Chloe and Reuben to potentially return. But at the moment I don’t know.”

However, Emmerdale fans have made their feelings clear on a potential Chloe return, with one writing on a fan forum: “Oh god no! I actually cheered when she left.

“Thankfully I think we’re safe from her being a dead weight in the show again for a while yet.

“Plus I don’t think I can sit through yet another ‘Dad isn’t allowed to see his own child’ storyline for a long, long time to come!”

Another responded to the question of whether they’d like to see Chloe return: “I’d rather stick pins in my eyes. So, no. No, I would not.”

A third commented: “No no no no….one of the most pointless characters who ended up in the most tedious storylines.

“I don’t see any reason for her to ever return. In this case I’d even be fine with them killing her off in a couple of years as is traditional, so Mack can have Reuben and we can remove the threat of Chloe returning.”

A fellow viewer added: “Oh please, please, please dont let her come back. I beg of you.”

But fans are not keen on the character making a comeback

But another replied: “Although she was a selfish character, I liked quite a bit of the drama written for her.

“Admittedly it did drag when it was only about her on-off loyalty towards Mack and resentfulness towards Charity.

“Maybe now Kerry is back, they could bring Chloe back to explore their mum-daughter relationship.”

A fellow viewer shared: “I actually quite liked her exit and the fact we avoided the obvious ending of Charity and Mack ending up with Reuben, so hope it sticks.”

Emmerdale airs on ITV1 and is available on ITVX.
