She encouraged her loved ones to get checked, as they could pass the gene onto their children too.

The storyline has hit hard for Lucy’s co-star Natalie J. Robb, who plays her sister-in-law Moira Dingle.

Natalie, 49, has opened up about finding a lump on her breasts last year.

Appearing on Lorraine, Natalie said: “I had a scare last year. I found a lump in my right breast and when I went in to see the doctor, he said he was more concerned about the one on my left.

“I had absolutely no idea! Even though you’re feeling for things, you’re not really sure how to do it properly. So that’s why it’s so, so important.”

Thankfully for Natalie, the outcome was positive, as she said: “Luckily for me, they were benign. Be aware and check the boobies!”

Meanwhile Lucy, 47, said of her latest storyline: “I hope we can do it justice. It won’t be all doom and gloom, there will be ups and downs just like with anything.

“But I hope it looks and feels real. And if just a few people get help for breast changes that do not feel or look right, it could do some good too.”

Next week on ITV, as she continues treatment for her cancer, unlike Faith Dingle who opted to end her life on her own terms, Chas makes a huge decision.

But she first makes a big discovery when Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) accidentally reveals to her that Aaron has no intention of getting the BRCA2 gene test.

Fuming at Vinny, Lydia (Karen Blick) intervenes and tells Aaron about Chas’ appointment that day.

Soon, a nervous Chas is bolstered by Aaron’s support as he joins her for the hospital appointment and she reveals her intention to have a double mastectomy.

Later, Chas admits how afraid she is and is comforted as she finally gives in to tears.

In another twist, Aaron eventually requests his referral for the gene test.
