Emmerdale fans have expressed frustration at an upcoming tragedy in the soap, with viewers complaining about ‘miserable’ and ‘doom and gloom’ storylines.

It’s been revealed that Laurel Thomas (Charlotte Bellamy) will be left fighting for her life in a tragic twist that sees her found lifeless by Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham).

After learning the truth about Jai’s torture and extradition of Amit Sharma (Anil Goutam), Laurel confronts him, which leads to a vicious argument between the pair.

She asks Jai to leave after he insults her late husband Ashley, but once alone she starts to feel unwell.

Laurel struggles to breathe and collapses to the floor, later found by stepdaughter Gabby who calls for an ambulance.

The upcoming twist has not been received well by some Emmerdale fans, who have expressed their irritation under a Metro.co.uk Facebook post.

Pamela Fisher commented, ‘What a miserable programme Emmerdale is these days’, while Jennie Edgar added, ‘Can Emmerdale become any more miserable? Beats EastEnders in that respect!’

Mavis Thurgood agreed, commenting: ‘I have not watched EastEnders for over 20 years because it was so depressing, now Emmerdale is going the same way’.

Meanwhile, Lyn Harling said, ‘More bloody doom and gloom how much more can we put up with’ and Janice Croft simply wrote: ‘Getting beyond a joke’.

In not unrelated news, some Emmerdale fans have shared their opinions on the ongoing domestic abuse storyline featuring Belle Dingle and Tom King.

Carol Auld commented on a separate Facebook post that the ordeal has been ‘too horrible’ and ‘awful’ to watch, despite describing the acting as ‘amazing’.

Others have branded the plot as ‘ridiculous’ and ‘sensationalist’.

Nevertheless, many have praised Emmerdale for its realistic portrayal of domestic abuse, with Sachin Chahal writing under the post: ‘Abuse can happen for years. It might not be nice to watch but it needs to be talked about.’

The two sagas come not long after the sudden death of Ethan, the PTSD agony of Charity, the diagnosis of Dawn and Billy’s baby Evan with leukaemia and Bob’s grief at the loss of his teen son in a devastating car crash earlier this year.

Will the village be blessed with some happier news soon?
