Emmerdale lines up surprising courtroom scenes for Rhona Goskirk

Gus' sentencing day takes an unexpected turn.

Emmerdale‘s Rhona Goskirk heads back to court next week as Gus Malcolms’ fate is finally revealed.

Rhona is anxious to find out whether her scheming ex-husband will be jailed for fraud after using their frozen embryos without her permission.

Recent episodes have seen Gus try to strike another deal with Rhona, suggesting that they could still come to an agreement over baby Ivy’s future.

In return, Gus is hoping that Rhona will give a statement defending him in court, which could potentially sway the judge when it comes to his sentencing.

Next week, Gus pays another visit to the village and catches up with Rhona’s husband Marlon and her mum Mary.

Gus promises that they’ll all still be part of Ivy’s life moving forward, even if he receives a lighter sentence from the judge. After Gus’ previous deception, Marlon can’t help wondering whether he can really be trusted.

As Rhona and Marlon discuss the situation, they’re aware that there are no guarantees but they’re grateful to have each other’s support.

When Rhona hands Ivy over to Gus after spending some time with her, they agree to put her first from now on.

The next morning, it’s the day of Gus’ sentencing and Rhona is apprehensive about how it’s all going to go.

Marlon tries to reassure Rhona, who’s clearly still weighing up exactly what she wants to say in her statement.

Once in court, Rhona begins reading her statement. Will she keep her promise to defend Gus?

Zoe Henry, who plays Rhona, told us: “I had a conversation with one of the producers, because Rhona does something in court. I asked: ‘Hang on a minute, is that pre-meditated? Because that changes everything’.

“But actually it goes back to what I’ve said before – actually what Rhona does is tell the truth. Sometimes it just takes her by surprise, which is what happens in that moment.

“I think truth be told, Rhona would love Gus, in a magical fairytale way, to just disappear. She’d have that baby and be a happy family unit, all together. But Rhona also knows that’s not particularly fair, so I don’t know.

“Marlon probably wants much less. His perspective is probably much fairer, actually. Rhona can’t detach herself from the emotion, whereas I think Marlon is able to stand back and see the bigger picture, the fairer picture.”

Emmerdale airs these scenes on Wednesday, April 24.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
