Emmerdale star Lucy Pargeter confirms long-term future on soap

"I'll stay as long as they'll have me."

Emmerdale star Lucy Pargeter has confirmed her long-term future on the ITV soap.

The actress made her debut as Chas Dingle over two decades ago in 2002 and, by the sounds of it, she’s not planning to leave the Dales anytime soon.

Speaking about her future as Chas in a new interview with My Weekly, Pargeter admitted that she can’t see herself ever making the decision to leave.

“I don’t think I will ever make the decision to leave myself – they’ll have to write me out, but even then they’d have to drag me out kicking and screaming! I’ve got a job that I love, and I’ll stay as long as they’ll have me,” she shared.

The soap star continued: “Even if I’m doing difficult storylines, there’s not a day goes by where we don’t laugh and giggle. We’re sometimes like children in kindergarten.

“Even though we’ve all been here so long, we still enjoy creating stories, and we’re constantly coming up with ideas. It can be long hours, and it’s tiring sometimes, but I can’t complain, because I love it.”

Chas has been going through a difficult since being diagnosed with breast cancer in January, with recent scenes seeing her make the decision to have a double mastectomy.

When the storyline was first announced, Pargeter said: “When the producers first discussed this storyline with me, I knew I didn’t want us to shy away from any aspect of this diagnosis for Chas.

“She saw her own mother ultimately die after an incurable breast cancer diagnosis, so for Chas to receive a breast cancer diagnosis herself, makes it all the more poignant. Our audience knows her so well, they have seen her relationships, know her faults, her passions, her insecurities, quirks and fears.

“So for them to see this story play out will be more meaningful given everything that has happened to both her and her mother.”
