Emmerdale’s Aaron Dingle to hide his gene test result in emotional scenes
He struggles to tell Chas the truth.
Emmerdale‘s Aaron Dingle lies to his mum Chas next week after receiving his gene test result.
Aaron makes out that he has tested negative for the faulty BRCA2 gene, not wanting Chas to worry about him.
Recent scenes on the ITV soap saw Chas discover that her breast cancer was caused by the faulty BRCA2 gene, which can be passed down between family members.
Chas encouraged Aaron to get tested alongside her brothers Cain Dingle and Caleb Miligan – and they all eventually agreed.
Next week, the results arrive and Moira is relieved when Cain tests negative.
Cain has a complex reaction to the news, feeling guilty that he’s in the clear when Chas is going through such a challenging time.
Caleb also receives a negative result, which means that his son Nicky is in the clear too.
In his own flat, Aaron discovers that he has inherited the faulty BRCA2 gene from his mum. Chas is pleased to hear that Cain and Caleb have tested negative, so Aaron lies to her by claiming that his result was negative too.
Aaron feels terrible when he sees how emotional and relieved Chas is over the news.
Danny Miller, who plays Aaron, told Digital Spy: “More than anything, I don’t think he realises the seriousness of it straight away. It’s a case of him having to deal with it fairly quietly and privately – so much so that he lies to people about it.
“Aaron has always been one of those who doesn’t like the constant eyes and attention on him.
“If he was to tell people straight away when he’s not dealt with it himself, he’s likely to get a lot of people asking him if he’s alright. That is the worst question you can ask him, really, because he’s just that type of person and he doesn’t like the questions.
“Aaron is happy that everyone else is negative. Secretly he’s going along with it that he’s negative as well, when really he’s positive. It’s almost like a defence mechanism where he’s like: ‘I’m negative and if I see it like that, no-one needs to know’. That’s where his head’s at.”
Discussing the longer-term arc of the story, Danny added: “I think Aaron just puts it to the back of his mind. I know there’ll be some sort of conversation with Chas about it at some point.
“Chas and Paddy are the only people he would really open up to and let his guard down to, without feeling weak and vulnerable.
“I think those conversations will be had at some point. But when that is, I don’t know. And if that is, I don’t know. We’ll wait and see what the producers and the storyliners want to do with it.
“I think it’ll be interesting but fingers crossed it’d be a story that’s told with great care and detail and a positive outcome – for Aaron and for me!”
BRCA1 and BRCA2 are examples of genes which can raise a person’s cancer risk if they become altered.
