Emmerdale’s Matthew Wolfenden has spoken about his new relationship and the end of his marriage to Charley Webb, revealing he’s received ‘horrible messages’ surrounding the split.

The David Metcalfe actor and Charley, who played Debbie Dingle in the ITV soap, announced their marriage had come to an end in a statement last November.

‘It is with love and respect that Matthew and I have decided to separate. We remain friends and our priority is the love for our children. For their sake, we would appreciate privacy at this time,’ Charley’s post read.

Matthew, meanwhile, posted an almost-identical paragraph but swapped his own name for Charley’s name.

Recently, as well as addressing his new relationship, Matthew revealed he was receiving ‘horrible messages’ surrounding the end of his and Charley’s marriage.

Taking to social media, the actor posted a statement on his Instagram stories ‘to set the record straight once and for all’.

‘Hopefully this will be the end of it, and the end of me getting horrible messages on socials, and people saying nasty stuff to me in the street’, he said.

‘1: It was NOT my decision to end my marriage. 2: I met Heather (who I was pictured with in London) way after my marriage ended.’

He added: ‘Hope this clears stuff up for all the trolls out there. Oh, and… 3: (and most importantly) Charley and I are still good friends. Our kids are our life and always will be’.

Over Christmas, Charley showed her support for Matthew in his new role, taking their children to see him in the production of Elf the Musical, where he played Buddy.

Matthew left Emmerdale in November last year.

David Metcalfe chose to depart life in the Dales and move to London, where his daughter Amba and her mum Priya Sharma (Fiona Wade) currently live.

His decision came after he learnt that his son Jacob Gallagher (Joe-Warren Plant) was in a relationship with Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins), David’s ex.

After spending weeks believing he was going to reunite with Vic, David couldn’t deal with the betrayal and packed his bags, failing to fix his relationship with Jacob before he went.
