‘GONE TOO FAR’ It’s making me not want to watch’ say Coronation Street fans as they blast soap’s grisly dead baby storyline

The storyline has raised anger in more ways than one.

CORONATION Street fans have been left furious over a proposed storyline involving a hidden dead baby.

The Sun has exclusively revealed that, in a bid to draw back viewers, Corrie bosses have planned for Toyah Battersby (Georgia Taylor) to deal with a hard-hitting new storyline.

After being raped in 2001 by Phil Simmonds (played by Jack Deam), with graphic scenes airing in the aftermath, viewers are set to learn she secretly gave birth to, and lost, a baby.

Rather than tell anyone, she buried the baby at the Red Rec – and 23 years later she’s now being forced to confront what happened when the park gets dug up.

It didn’t take long for fans to furiously hit out at Corrie writers for the ‘sickening’ storyline, while others claim there’s glaring plot holes that make the whole thing implausible.

Speaking on X (formerly Twitter), one fan wrote: “I’m sorry but if this is true then it sounds unbelievably ghastly – what on earth is going on at Corrie?”

“No. I make fun of how bad Corrie can be sometimes, but this is just absolutely horrific,” said a second, adding: ”The way that Toyah’s rape was treated when it happened 20 years ago was bad enough, but this is making me want to not watch.

“Georgia Taylor will be great no matter what but seriously wtf.”

“Part of Toyah’s story for years has been her desperation to have a baby, which she couldn’t have,” noted a third. “It’s never been raised up in any of the many storylines she’s had based around that. She literally had a stillborn in 2018.”

“This is disgusting and just not needed. What are they playing at ?!” said a furious fourth.

While a fifth noted: “Utterly ludicrous and extremely distasteful, if true. Flying in the face of all continuity from that time, an insult to the audience – and to an actress of the calibre of Georgia Taylor.

“Not to mention being a rehash of an #Emmerdale plotline of recent months. #Corrie, WTF?”

Last week it was announced that Emmerdale producer Kate Brooks would be taking on the top job at Corrie following the departure of Iain MacLeod, who was promoted to executive producer for continuing drama by ITV bosses despite the soap’s current crisis.

The move comes shortly after Charlie Lawson, who plays Corrie legend Jim McDonald, blasted the soap for its sh*te woke plots.

They’ve also been suffering knocks with ratings – especially when at Christmas, the soap failed to break into the top 10 most-watched shows, coming in 12th with around 2.6million viewers.
