Having enjoyed a successful career in the 80s in the States before playing popular character Mark on Emmerdale, Maxwell looked worlds away from his boyish looks that rose him to fame.

Maxwell appeared in the leading male role in hit film Grease 2 in 1982 which kickstarted his Hollywood career.

A movie heartthrob, his handsome looks helped him to land a slew of roles over the years.

Despite being born in Derbyshire, Maxwell first found fame in the US after moving there when he married American actress Juliet Mills in 1980.

He soon found success on the Broadway stage before landing the role of Michael Carrington in Grease 2.

Maxwell became an official citizen of the US in 1991 and continued to enjoy a lengthy career in acting Stateside and played the role of Miles Colby in the hugely popular Dynasty and its spin-off The Colbys.

The 64 year old actor remained based in the US but in the 2000s increasingly took on roles in more British TV shows including Casualty and Holby City.

It was in 2009 that he bagged a role in ITV’s Emmerdale where many soap lovers will recognise him for his time as Mark Wylde.

He appeared in the soap for just one year after choosing to quit at the end of his first contract with his character being involved in a whodunnit murder.

His wife Natasha killed him on-screen and she was found guilty of the crime 10 months later.
