Tragedy struck in the Dales as a new year began with Heath Hope’s death shaking the eponymous ITV village and bringing many viewers to tears.

But in the aftermath of the lad’s death, his twin sister Cathy (played by Gabrielle Dowling), who was accused of being responsible for the crash that cost him his life, threw the blame onto their pal Angelica King (Rebecca Bakes).

The pair of girls were brought into the police station for questioning and just as Cathy was making her accusation, Angelica refused to go along with it, allowing her mother Nicola King (Nicola Wheeler) to speak on her behalf.

This drove a considerable wedge between Cathy and her distraught father Bob (Tony Audenshaw) as their relationship was already fragile to begin with.

But, eventually, Angelica confessed and admitted she was behind the wheel of Wendy Posner’s stolen car on that fateful night.

Cathy is cleared of all blame but is her friendship with Angel really doomed after all the turmoil?

Coming up next week, it’s the twins’ birthday, which encourages Bob and Brenda Walker (Lesley Dunlop) to try and keep their grief from Cathy.

How will she cope on her first birthday without Heath?

This remains to be seen but, in other scenes, Angel offers an olive branch to Cathy and the teens both grieve in silence together.

But while the youngsters appear ready to let go, their families are completely ripped apart.

Next week, Angelica also prepares to return to school for the first time since the accident that led to Heath Hope’s death.

Jimmy King (Nick Miles) apologises to Bob who vows they will never be friends again.

In other scenes, Wendy Posner (Susan Cookson) listens to Bob rant about Jimmy and urges him to put an end to this, for his daughter Cathy’s sake.

Meanwhile, Jimmy and Nicola are left anxious by mention of a home visit from the Youth Justice Service as their daughter faces the music.

How will it play out?

Emmerdale airs weeknights from 7.30pm on ITV.
