Who is Carly Hope in Emmerdale and who played her? Soap fans beg for famous actress to return

Carly Hope caused quite a stir during her time in the Emmerdale village and as Gemma Atkinson makes a return to acting, fans are convinced she could be coming back

Carly Hope caused quite a stir during her time in the Emmerdale village.

Gemma Atkinson played Carly for several years on the ITV soap, whilst Coronation Street and Waterloo Road star Rebecca Ryan also played the role of Carly for some time too. The character was born in 1990 to Bob and Barbara Hope, which began Carly’s tumultuous on-and-off time in the village. Her and older brother Josh initially returned to the village thinking their dad was going blind, but it was later revealed that that was actually a lie created by Viv in order for Bob to get to see his kids.

Carly later ended up having a romance with Marlon Dingle whilst she was babysitting his daughter April. She admitted she loved him and the pair spent a couple of nights together. Whilst Bob initially disapproved of their relationship, he soon accepted it and the pair were together for a brief while before Carly ended up exiting the soap.

Fans have been wondering whether Gemma might return to her role, given she is back acting now. “Emmerdale has mentioned me going back, but with soaps, the thing that people don’t realise is that the cast and crew do quite gruelling hours. What I love now about my job with the radio is I know every single day when I’m going to get home,” she said.

“I can plan my family life and fit being a mum around that job. Maybe when Mia is a bit older and in school I might consider it, but at the minute it’s not practical. Especially with Gorka doing a lot of touring and stuff.” However, Gemma is heading back to acting and is shooting a movie in March. After being asked by a fan if she would return to her former career, Gemma said: “I wouldn’t be able to commit to soaps long term again, even though I loved it at the time. It changes day to day, so with children, it’s difficult. Especially with Gorks being away from August [to do Strictly]. I need to work around them ideally.”

Teasing what is to come, Gemma revealed: “I can do any drama or films though with a start and end date filming-wise, which I’d absolutely do. I’m shooting a British movie in March actually, which is exciting!”
